DepartmentofElectricalEngineering(DEE)isestablishedbasedonthepowersystemanditsautomationdiscipline.ThedisciplinewasawardedasakeynationaldisciplineinJanuary2002.DEEoriginatedin1953whenHuazhongInstituteofTechnology(theformerHuazhongUniversityofScienceandTechnology)wasjustfounded.Itbeganadmittinggraduatestudentsin1961.ThedisciplineofpowersystemanditsautomationwithDEEattachedwasamongthefirstbatchofdisciplinesapprovedbytheMinistryofEducationasentitledtoconferthedoctoratein1981.Itisoneofdisciplinesforintensivedevelopmentintheprojectofthe“211Engineering”and“985Engineering”sponsoredbytheMinistryofEducation.ThefacultyinDEEincludes1academicianoftheChineseAcademyofScience,17professors,11associateprofessorsand27aredoctorateholders.Since2002,over500academicpapershavebeenpublishedinforemostacademicperiodicalsandpresentedatinternationalconferences,over1000papersofwhichhavebeenindexedbySCIandEI.Theon-goingprojectsnumberover200,withatotalfundofover150millionYuan(RMB).Sofar,4awardsatthenationallevelandanumberofawardsattheministerialandprovinciallevelhavebeenwon,morethan600Master’scandidatesand200doctoralcandidateshavebeenadmittedandtrained.Thisdisciplinehasalwaysattachedimportancetoteachingandhaswonawardsforexcellentteachingmaterialsandawardsforexcellenteducationalachievementsatthenational,provincialandministeriallevelformanytimes.

Currently,DEEhas5mainresearchbranches,namely,(1)Powersystemoperationandcontrol,whichfocusesontheapplicationofmoderncontroltheoriesinthepowersystem.Remarkableachievementshavebeenmadeinthetheoryandapplicationofsteadycontrolofthepowersystemandmicroprocessorbasedexcitationcontrol.Thisbranchischaracterizedbycloseintegrationoftheorywithpractice.(2)Powersystemprotectiverelaying.Thefacultyinthisbranchhavewonmanyanational-levelawardandattainedverygoodsocialbenefits.Apartfrombreakthroughsintheory,theyhaveawardedanumberofpatents.Thisresearchbranchisprestigiousamonginternationalanddomesticcolleagues.(3)Powersystemanalysisandplanning,thefocusofwhichisonthemathematicalmodels,computationmethods,andsoftwaresystemforthepowersystem.Theresearchachievementshavewideapplicationsinpowersystems.(4)Energystorageandpowergridsecurity.Usingsuperconductingmagneticenergystoragesystems,flywheelenergystoragesystems,supercapacitorsandstoragecellstoimprovethepowersystemsecurity.(5)Renewableenergyanddistributedgenerations.Focusingontheresearchoflargescaleimplementationofwindpowerandsolarpowerinpowersystems,andreliableandeconomyoperationofmicrogrid.

 The Department always giveshighimportancetothedevelopmentoftheacademicechelons,withallitsresearchareasstaffedbytheelderly,middle-agedandyoungteachingstafftomaketheechelonsrelativelycompleteandstrongasawhole.Itboastsalargeandwell-equippedPowerSystemDynamicSimulationLaboratorywherevariousexperimentsandresearchesonthepowersystemcanbeperformedandexperimentalstudieshavebeenconductedformanymajorpowergenerating,transmittingandtransmissionprojects.

Inthefuture,DEEispromisingtoreachanewheightinbringingthesuperiorityoftheacademicgroupofthisdisciplineandfurtherexpandingtheapplicationofnewtheoriesandnewtechnologiesinthepowersystem.Majoreffortswillbedevotedtotrainingtop-notchleadersintheirchosenfieldsoflearning,andbuildingPowerSystemDynamicSimulationLaboratoryintoabaseofexperimentsandresearchesonthepowersystematthenationallevel.
