Overview

InstituteofFusionandPlasmaResearch(hereinafterreferredtoasInstitute)isestablishedunderSchoolofElectricalandElectronicEngineeringasaconsequenceofChina’sparticipationintheInternationalThermonuclearExperimentalReactor(ITER)project(www.iter.org)andthehugedemandoffuturefusionenergyresearchanddevelopment,aimingtocarryoutrelevantfundamentalresearchesandnurturetalentstomeettheneedsoffusionresearch.

TheInstituteownsaJ-TEXTdevicewhichisjointlybuiltbyHuazhongUniversityofScienceandTechnology(HUST)andtheUniversityofTexasatAustin.Thisdeviceistheonlymedium-sizedtokamakamongChineseuniversities,andisalsothemainplatformfor“researchcenterofmagneticconfinementfusion,MinistryofEducation”.TheInstitutehas24faculties,13staffmembers,includingoneacademician,one1000talents,oneChangjiangScholar,5professors,7associateprofessors.

ITERprojectwillexplorethefeasibilityoffusionenergyapplicationsinscienceandengineeringtechnology,layingthefoundationforthefinalcommercialapplicationofthisadvancedenergy.ITERisatypicallargescientificexperimentfacility,involvingvariousdisciplines,withmanydifficultiesinprojectimplementation.ParticipationinITERprojectmadetheInstituteachievinginterdisciplinaryanddevelopmentinareasofelectric,physics,material,energy,mechanics,controlandcomputer.Italsopromotedthetrainingforcompoundtalents,andimprovedtheinfluenceofouruniversityinfuturecutting-edgeareas.

TheInstitutehasconductedrelevantstudyandtalentstraininginthemainresearchfieldsoffusionengineeringtechnology,plasmaphysicsandnuclearscienceandtechnology.Italsotakespartin32nationallevelprojects,withmorethan150millionYuan,suchasInternationalThermonuclearExperimentalReactor(ITER)domesticprojects,"973"project,andtheMajorProgramofNationalNaturalScienceFoundationofChina.Throughtheresearchoftheseprojects,theInstitutehasachievedfruitfulresults:independentlydevelopedtheworld'sleadingthree-wavefar-infraredlaserpolarizationinterferometer,withkeyperformanceindicatorsonworld'stoplevel;developedITERfusionpowersupplycomponentsadoptingmulti-coupledfieldanalysisanddesignmethods;developedthefirstcontrolsystemwithcompleteEPICSCAprotocolonfusiondeviceinChina;proposedtheturbulentaccelerationtheoryoftokamakplasmarotation;builtthefirstsetdynamicresonantmagneticperturbationsysteminChina,andprovideacompleterangefortheinteractiontheresonantmagneticperturbationandthetearingmodesandsoon.TheInstitutehaspublishedmorethan100SCIpapersininternationalhigh-leveljournals,suchasPhysicalReviewLettersandNuclearFusion,andfacultieshavemanyinvitedtalksonvariousinternationaltopconferences.

TheInstituteactivelycarriesoutacademicexchangeactivities,andhasestablishedcollaborationwithmanyfamousinstitutesanduniversities,suchasFusionResearchCenterofUniversityofTexas,PrincetonPlasmaPhysicsLaboratory,GeneralAtomics,MaxPlanckInstituteofPlasmaPhysics,ResearchInstituteforFusionbyMagneticconfinementatAlternativeEnergiesandAtomicEnergyCommissionofFrance,CulhamLaboratoryofUK,NationalFusionResearchInstituteofKorea,JapanAtomicEnergyAgency,SouthwesternInstituteofPhysics,InstituteofPlasmaPhysicsChineseAcademyofSciences,UniversityofScienceandTechnology.Theyallhaveregularexchangeofscholarvisits,jointtrainingingraduatestudents.

Uptillnow,theInstitutehasbeensuccessfullyheldseveralworldwidemeetings,forexample,“theFifthChina-USMagneticFusionCollaborationWorkshop”,“thefirstandsecondEastLakeConferenceofTokamakPhysics”and“2013AnnualChineseSummerSchoolonPlasmaPhysics”.
