Overview

InstituteofAppliedElectromagneticEngineeringoriginatesfromtheCenterofElectromagneticTheoryandChargedParticleResearch,whichwasfoundedbyProf.MingwuFan,theacademicianofChineseEngineeringAcademy.Theinstitutefocusesonthetheoreticalresearchonelectromagneticfieldandbeamdynamics,aswellascontributestoR&Dofcomplexelectromagneticequipmentsuchasparticleaccelerators.Thesefundamentalresearchesextenditsapplicationstoindustrialirradiation,medicaldiagnosticandtreatment,andenvironmentprotection.Mainresearchareasarebasedonmulti-disciplines,includingelectricengineering,acceleratorphysics,mechanicalengineering,radiationchemistry,microwave,controlsystem.

Thereare15facultymembersoftheinstitute,whichincludes4professors(1academician)and5associateprofessors.Theinstituteattractsmanytalentedresearchersallovertheworldasfull-timestaffsandpart-timeconsultants.AlsotheinstitutelauncheswidecooperationwithfamousinstitutesinUSA,EuropeandJapanandengagedeightforeignexpertsasthevisitingprofessors.

Inrecentyears,theinstitutehasbeenfundedbyanumberofnationalfundingprojectsrelatedtotheresearchanddevelopmentofparticleaccelerators:

(1)Virtualprototypingtechniquesfordesignofcompactcyclotrons,fundedbythekeyprogramofNationalScienceFoundationofChina.Theprojectintroducedvirtualprototypingtechnologyintothedesignofparticleacceleratorsforthefirsttime,reducingtheriskandcostofthedesignofthesecomplexfacilities.

(2)BuiltthefirstPETcenterandnuclearmedicineplatformincentralChina,withTongjiMedicalCollege.Basedonthisplatform,researchesontheearly-stagediagnosisofmalignanttumorandcorrespondingtreatmentsarecarriedout.

(3)Researchanddevelopmentofthemainmagnetexperimentalplatformfora10MeVsmallvalleygapPETcyclotronwithinternalionsource.Theisochronismofthemagneticfieldhasbeenachievedatahighlevel.

(4)Researchonthelinac-basedterahertzfreeelectronlaser.ThisisafirstuniversityterahertzFELfacilityinChina.Thefirstbeamwasobservedin2014andnowitisinoverallcommissioning.

(5)ResearchonthehighpowerRFnegativeionsource,foundedbyMOST.Nowthefirstphaseresearchhasbeencarriedoutsuccessfullyandwasassessedasadistinguishedproject.

(6)Researchanddevelopmentofahighefficiencyindustrialirradiationelectronaccelerator,withaninsulatedcoretransformer(ICT)type.Theapplicationsofthistypeofacceleratorcovertheprocessingofwireandcable,surfacecoatingofsemiconductors,medicalandhealthproductssterilizing,andindustrialwastestreatment.

ThemainprojectoftheinstituteistheR&Dofaprotontherapyfacilitybasedonsuperconductingcyclotron,whichisa5years(2016-2020)MajorStateResearch&DevelopmentProgramsupportedbyMOST(MinistryofScienceandTechnolo-gy,China).ThisisacollaborativeprojectwithteamsfromHUST,CIAE(ChinaInstituteofAtomicEnergy),TongjiHospitalandXiehehospitalaffiliatedtoHUST.
