Huazhong University of Science and Technology(HUST) is a national key university directly belongs to the Ministry of Education. It is one of the first universities to be included in the national "211 Project" key construction and national "985 Project" construction. It is the first batch of "double first-class" universities established in 2017 by the country. The school occupies more than 7,000 acres and is located on the bank of Donghu Lake in the core area of China's Optics Valley. With a beautiful campus environment and green trees, the school has a 72% afforestation rate and is known as a "forestry university." The adjacent East Lake Green Road has created a world-class leisure and fitness “back garden” for teachers and students.

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of HUST was formerly the Department of Power Engineering of Huazhong Institute of Technology. It was founded in 1952, it was renamed the Department of Power Engineering of Huazhong University of Technology in 1988. In 2001, the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was established. In all previous evaluation of the first-round disciplines of the Ministry of Education, the electrical engineering disciplines of this school are always among the top three in the country. In 2017, it was selected as the first batch of “double first-class” construction disciplines in the country.

The school has a strong faculty. There are 78 professors and 71 associate professors. Among them: there are 3 academicians, 4 full-time “the Thousand Talents Plan” scholars, 12 “Young Thousand Talents Plan” scholars, 8 “Chang Jiang Scholars Program” scholars, 4 outstanding young people, 12 “973 project” chief scientists and national key R&D project leaders, 2 national teaching teams, 2 innovative teams of the Ministry of Education, and 1 innovation team in the key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology. This has formed a high-level academic team with clear academic research directions and balanced research forces in all directions. The school has established Department of Electrical and Control Engineering, Department of Power Engineering, Department of High Voltage Engineering, Department of Applied Electronic Engineering, Department of Electrician Theory and New Electromagnetic Technology, Institute of Fusion and Plasma, Institute of Applied Electromagnetic Engineering, National Electrical and Electronic Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (Electrical), and National Electrical Electronic Engineering Basic Course Teaching Base (Electrical)

The school has a complete subject direction. The school’s electrical engineering discipline is the first batch of national first-level key disciplines. It has all the five disciplines defined by the Ministry of Education, among them: Motors and Electrical Appliances, Power Systems and Automation, Electrical Theory and New Technologies Key disciplines are all National secondary key disciplines; Power Electronics and Power Transmission, Electromagnetic Theory and New Technologies (including High Voltage and Insulation) are the characteristics of disciplines. The main research direction of the school covers the entire process of production, transmission, application, transformation, detection, control, dispatching and management of electric energy.  What’s more, the school refers to the international first-rate electrical disciplines. Through the integration of disciplines, it has opened up a number of new frontier disciplines, such as: electrical energy storage, pulse power, pulsed magnetic fields, magnetic confinement fusion, plasma medicine, accelerators and applications, advanced electrical materials and devices, which have formed the widest range of electrical engineering disciplines in domestic research.

The college has the most complete scientific research and innovation platform in the domestic electrical disciplines. It has a national major science and technology infrastructure, a national key laboratory, a joint laboratory for international cooperation, a 111 innovation and introduction base, and 8 provincial and ministerial-level key laboratories (engineering research centers). Among them, the pulsed strong magnetic field experimental device is the only national major science and technology infrastructure in China's electrical engineering disciplines, and it has become one of the best pulsed magnetic field devices in the world; the Joint Laboratory for International Cooperation in Fusion and Electromagnetic Technology has the only large and medium-sized Tokamak J-TEXT among domestic universities, which is a training and basic research base for magnetic confinement fusion talents recognized by the Ministry of Education; it has the only national new-type motor national specialized laboratory in domestic universities, and its construction includes electric power safety, new-type motors, pulse power, and ship power, which are several provincial and ministerial key laboratories and engineering research centers. The college has 10 teaching and research buildings, and the newly-built electric building will be put into use in the second half of 2018 with a building area of 32,000 square meters.

The school insists on putting the quality of personnel training first. The school is the first batch of master's programs, doctoral programs, post-doctoral mobile stations, and first-level discipline doctoral programs. There are more than 1,700 undergraduate students and more than 1,000 graduate students. Undergraduate enrollment and training majors are electrical engineering and automation. Graduate student enrollment and training are conducted in accordance with the first level discipline of electrical engineering. After China became a formal member of the "Washington Accord" (International Undergraduate Engineering Degree Mutual Recognition Agreement) in 2016, the school passed the engineering education certification that year. The college entrance examination results for undergraduates have been among the best in the school. More than 90% of graduate students are from 985 and 211 universities. The school has built one of the first national demonstration centers for experimental teaching, two national teaching teams, and five national practical teaching bases. It has a national first-class specialty discipline construction site and a state-level talent training mode innovation experimental zone, and established 4 national quality courses and national network quality sharing courses. The quality of talent training has been highly recognized by the society. Each year, there are over one million social scholarships set up by the company in the school, and hundreds of special job fair for college graduates. Graduates of the college have won numerous national awards for outstanding doctoral dissertations and outstanding doctoral dissertations.

The college has undertaken many important national research tasks. Taking the country's major demand and the frontier of discipline development as the traction, in the past five years, we have led a series of major key projects such as the National 973 Program, the National Key R&D Program, the ITER Plan Special Project, the 863 Program Special Project, the National Natural Science Fund, and so on. We have more than 200 million Yuan in funding each year, obtained more than 350 national invention patents, 6 European and US patents, published more than 600 SCI papers, and 7 hot papers. We have obtained 1 first prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award and 4 second prizes in the province, more than 20 items of Ministry of science and technology awards. Since the country began to establish a major R&D program in 2016, the college has undertaken 15 projects and topics.

The academic exchanges of school are active. Multi teachers serve in important science and technology consulting qualifications such as the National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure Planning Committee, the National Major Special Expert Committee, and the International Strong Magnetic Field Association. The school has established long-term and in-depth cooperative relations with more than 20 scientific research institutions including Princeton University, the United States National Strong Magnetic Field Laboratory, the German Maple Institute of Plasma Physics, the French Atomic Energy Commission and the Institute for Controlled Nuclear Fusion, and was invited to participate in the ITPA international joint experiment. We jointly undertook seven Sino-U.S. fusion cooperation projects jointly organized by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and the U.S. Department of Energy. In the past five years, we has hosted a number of major academic conferences at home and abroad, such as the 13th Five-Year Plan and Discipline Development Strategy Seminar of the National Fund Committee, the Second China Particle Accelerator Conference, the East Lake Conference of the Tokamak Physical Society of China, the International Academic Seminar on “Forefront Research in the Field of Strong Magnetic Fields”, the Association of Chinese Electric Power Education (Chancellor), the Standing Committee of the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology, and the Sixth International Conference on IET Renewable Energy Generation.

All teachers and students of the school take the world-class electrical engineering discipline as their goal. Led by the development of high-tech electrical engineering and electric power technology, they condense the direction of the discipline, gather academic teams, build academic bases, alcoholize the academic atmosphere, unite and pragmatic, and innovate truthfully. Together we create a better future for electrical engineering disciplines.
